Independent Study Options

Christian Philosophy of Education Independent Study
Course Description: This course covers 11 foundational questions for developing a Christian philosophy of education (Instructor: Jeff Walton). The 3-hour recording is one component of the independent study option that fulfills the Christian Philosophy of Education requirement for AACS teacher certification. Participants will watch the recording and complete the independent study requirements: recording project, reaction papers to four books read, four-page personal Christian philosophy of education. Participants need only a computer with Internet access and speakers or headphones. Submit the completed verification assignment to the AACS office to receive a certificate from AACS for Christian Philosophy of Education (30 contact hours of continuing education credit).

Please note: This course will not count towards AACS certificate renewal requirements if the teacher has already received credit for Christian Philosophy of Education.

Bible Doctrines Independent Study
Course Description: This course is a survey of the core doctrines of the Bible with particular emphasis on the doctrines of Scripture, God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, Man, Sin, Salvation, and the Church. The course strives for practical application of core doctrines to Christian school teachers and the students they teach (Instructor: Nathan Crockett). Participants will watch the class recordings and complete the independent study requirements: course summary project, reaction papers to three books read. Participants need only a computer with Internet access and speakers or headphones. Submit the completed verification assignment to the AACS office to receive a certificate from AACS for Bible Doctrines (30 contact hours of continuing education credit).

Please note: This course will not count towards AACS certificate renewal requirements if the teacher has already received credit for Bible Doctrines.

Course Options

Using G Suite for Education, Google Classroom, and Chromebooks Effectively
Instructor: David Warren
Course Description: Chromebooks are easy-to-use, fast, and secure computers. Because they remove the technology hassles letting teachers focus on teaching and learning, Chromebooks are a favorite for teachers. In these sessions participants will (1) learn how best to take advantage of these devices in their classrooms, from basic use and customization to integrating Google tools and services, (2) explore a variety of ways to use the free G Suite for Education tools in the classroom, (3) learn to move beyond the static workflow environment and take advantage of the full suite of dynamic features that are now standard in G Suite for Education, (4) take a peek at what’s new and explore what’s possible when students have access to these tools and these advanced features. Following viewing the recordings, the participant will complete the assessment and will receive a certificate from AACS for the class and ten contact hours of continuing education credit.

Lifting the Curtain on Dyslexia: Facts, Identification, and Strategies
Instructor: Cindy Hall
Course Description:
One person in five has some degree of dyslexia, so there are dyslexic students in your classrooms. This course is intended to help teachers identify their dyslexic students by learning the characteristics of dyslexia. Participants will learn basic facts about dyslexia, which will dispel myths and lead to appropriate expectations, and will learn specific evidence-based strategies to help dyslexic learners. An overview of how the dyslexia center works inside LLCA, how it has boosted school enrollment, and information about how to become a trained Orton-Gillingham tutor will also be presented. Following viewing the recordings, the participant will email the completed verification assignment to the AACS office and will receive a certificate from AACS for the class and ten contact hours of continuing education credit.

Professional Development Using Marks of a Healthy Christian School
Instructor: Jeff Walton
Course Description: The book Marks of a Healthy Christian School can be used to provide 10 hours of onsite professional development for school staff. The course surveys the book and the discussion/activity guides and provides guidance and practical assistance for school leaders who will facilitate the staff development activity. Participants need only a computer with Internet access and speakers or headphones. Read the book before watching the class, watch the class recordings, and complete short assignments applying information from the class and verifying completion of class requirements. Submit the completed verification assignment to the AACS office to receive a certificate from AACS for 5 contact hours of continuing education credit. (In addition to the 5 contact hours for completing the course, participants will receive 10 contact hours with the teachers when they lead the onsite professional development activity at their school.)
